Ophrys scolopax-Woodcock Orchid
Ophrys scolopax-Woodcock Orchid
Kingdom: Plante Phylum: Magnoliophyta Class: Liliopsida Order: Asparagales Family: Orchidaceae Genus: Orphyrs specie: scolopax General Discription: Ophrys scolopax, commonly known as the woodcock orchid, blooms from April to May. It is often found in southern Europe in both grassy and stony habitats, such as meadows and lawns. It grows to be about 15 to 45cm in height. The nutrient rich roots are edible when dried and made into powder. The powder is consumed by adding into bread, cereal or water. Interesting fact: It is also known to be part of the “Bee Orchids” by which the hermaphroditic flower is shaped like a bee and gives off female pheromones to attract male bees to pollinate.
